5 Things to Know Before Gorilla Trekking in Rwanda

Permits, boots and timing — the details that turn a good trek into a great one.

Gorilla trekking in Volcanoes National Park is the highlight of most trips to Rwanda, but a few details make the difference between a good day and a great one.

  1. Book your permit early. Permits cost USD 1,500 per person and only 96 are issued per day. High season sells out months ahead.
  2. Wear the right boots. The trails are steep, muddy and often wet. Waterproof boots with ankle support and gaiters are essential.
  3. The hike varies. Some families are reached in one hour, others take four. Tell your guide your fitness level the evening before.
  4. Start early. Briefing at Kinigi begins at 7:00 AM. From Kigali that means leaving around 4:30 AM — or spend the night in Musanze.
  5. Hire a porter. For USD 10-20 they carry your bag and help you up the slopes, and it supports families living around the park.
