Gorilla Trekking in Rwanda

A carefully planned encounter with mountain gorillas in the forests of Volcanoes National Park.

The experience

Gorilla trekking is one of Rwanda’s signature wildlife experiences. On the morning of the trek, guests attend a briefing before being allocated to a trekking group. The walk can vary in length depending on the location of the gorilla family, terrain and weather.

The forest environment is part of the experience: bamboo, volcanic slopes, giant vegetation, birdlife and changing mountain weather create a sense of entering a living ecosystem rather than simply visiting an attraction.

What the trekking day normally looks like

  • Early breakfast and transfer to the park briefing point.
  • Registration, briefing and group allocation.
  • Drive to the relevant trailhead with guides and trackers.
  • Trek through forest terrain to locate the gorilla family.
  • Observation time is managed according to park rules and guide instructions.
  • Return to the trailhead and continue with lunch, a cultural visit or a relaxed afternoon.

Preparing well

Good walking shoes with grip, long trousers, long sleeves, rain protection, water and a small daypack are important. Gaiters and gardening-style gloves can be useful in wet or dense vegetation. Porters can also make the walk more comfortable while supporting local livelihoods.

Fitness helps, but trekking conditions vary. Tell us about mobility concerns or preferred trekking difficulty when we plan your trip so we can advise on a suitable overall itinerary.

Build a complete Volcanoes stay

Many guests combine gorilla trekking with golden monkey trekking, a scenic drive through Musanze, a cultural experience, Twin Lakes viewpoints, cave visits where appropriate, or a relaxed additional night near the park. This reduces rushing and gives the mountain region more depth.
