Gorilla trekking in Volcanoes National Park is the highlight of most trips to Rwanda, but a few details make the difference between a good day and a great one.
- Book your permit early. Permits cost USD 1,500 per person and only 96 are issued per day. High season sells out months ahead.
- Wear the right boots. The trails are steep, muddy and often wet. Waterproof boots with ankle support and gaiters are essential.
- The hike varies. Some families are reached in one hour, others take four. Tell your guide your fitness level the evening before.
- Start early. Briefing at Kinigi begins at 7:00 AM. From Kigali that means leaving around 4:30 AM — or spend the night in Musanze.
- Hire a porter. For USD 10-20 they carry your bag and help you up the slopes, and it supports families living around the park.
