Nyungwe Forest National Park protects one of the oldest rainforests in Africa, and its canopy walkway is the only one of its kind in East Africa.
The bridge. Suspended 70 metres above the forest floor and stretching 160 metres, the walkway is reached by the Igishigishigi Trail. The full circuit takes about two hours at an easy pace.
What you will see. Great blue turacos, hornbills and, if you are lucky, colobus monkeys moving through the canopy below you. Nyungwe holds more than 300 bird species and 13 primate species.
Chimpanzee tracking. Most visitors combine the canopy walk with chimpanzee tracking, which starts before dawn from Uwinka or Cyamudongo.
Getting there. Nyungwe is roughly five to six hours by road from Kigali. We recommend two nights so the drive does not eat into your time in the forest.
